VAOBA was a Platinum Sponsor of the Student Design Competition and is very pleased that our student took a First Place in the Textile Division!

VAOBA'S Fiber Committee, and several VAOBA members attended the 2016 AOA National Fleece Conference in Arlington, VA. A good time was had by all!

Along with other VAOBA members, the Fiber Committee volunteered in the fleece room and also manned the VAOBA table where they talked with many folks about VAOBA and of course, fleece!

VAOBA sponsored several 'events' within the Conference:

  • Keynote Address
Taking the Alpaca to Different Levels: presented by Samanta Cortes
Samanta reviewed the steps after the shearing of alpacas to the industrial manufacturing of the fiber to a garment.

  • The Alpaca Genome: Evolution, History and Future Prospects
    presented by Dr. Andy Merriwether
The latest updates on the alpaca genome project, candidate gene sequencing of genes for color and disease, gene mapping studies for many traits, and the latest cytogenetic chromosome maps for alpacas. Discussed the latest data on what species alpacas were domesticated from (be prepared to be surprised). Those attending were the first to hear the latest exciting news about alpaca genetics.

  • Breeding Strategies for Fleece, Color and Beyond
    presented by Dr. Andy Merriwether
The basics of alpaca color inheritance and some quick advice on EPDs and dealing with breeding for fleece traits. A quick overview of how to make each color and how to avoid colors and patterns you don't want to breed for. Also, a very quick overview of how to use the AOA EPD program to improve the odds of fleece improvement.
